Joining Narcosia Anaesthesia in late 2010, Matt Howes provides anaesthetic care for a wide range of procedures, whilst maintaining a part-time public consultant appointment at the Mater Hospitals, Brisbane.

Dr Howes graduated from the University of Queensland School of Medicine in 1996 and maintains his affiliation as a Senior Lecturer. Early career interests in intensive care and infectious diseases led to studying in Thailand for a Tropical Medicine qualification. However, he was dedicated to Anaesthesia and, with placements in Cairns, throughout Brisbane and also England, he completed training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 2005. A Specialist Anaesthetist appointment at the Mater Adults and Mothers’ Hospitals began in 2006 with particular interests in high-risk obstetrics, cancer surgery and acute pain management, as well as performing numerous roles for ANZCA registrar training.

2009 was a watershed year, spent with his family in Vanuatu, working as the Anaesthetist at Vila Central Hospital for 12 months under the auspices of AusAID.  Short volunteer trips to assist have continued annually.

More recently, Matt has attained a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound from the University of Melbourne and is completing a Masters in Perioperative Medicine via Monash University.
